Self Portrait, Ms Pacman, 2020

Self Portrait, Ms. Pac Man (2020) is the first in a series of new work where the main focal point is a single arcade machine. Arcades have been a common motif, appearing in paintings since 2018, yet it appears here for the first time as a standalone 'figure'. The series can be regarded as self-portraits of sorts and the specific games depicted - Pac-Man, Ms. Pac Man, Frogger and so on - as the embodiment of contemporary life, a social commentary.
The game depicted in this work, Ms. Pac-Mac, is significant in that it launched in 1981, the same year as the artist's birth, and was one of the first arcades he remembers playing as a child. It is also significant in the gaming world not only as a sequel to Pac-Man, one of the most popular video games ever created, but also in that it introduced the first female protagonist in an arcade game. It captured many important issues of its day, from consumerism, drug use and gender politics, that remain as relevant today as then.
