The title for this painting is taken from a letter that Jung wrote in 1916 to a Miss Bowditch, a patient with whom he was about to start working. It is simply the internal awakening that occurs through ongoing introspection and self-analysis. The work is intentionally devoid of any pattern, and in that regard, represents a more stripped back and honest look within oneself. The 'façade' has been dropped; the ego has almost been fully removed.
